2012 Craftinsure Filey Regatta traveller tide clock trophy presented to Ulley SC

2012 Craftinsure Filey Regatta traveller tide clock trophy presented to Ulley SC

Craft Insure 2012 Filey Regatta Report

60 boats competed over 2 days at this year’s regatta. Number of entries was down from the usual 100/120 dinghies but those that made the effort enjoyed 2 good days sailing and the usual Filey SC ‘hospitality’. The usual 2 courses operated in Filey bay, a traditional Filey ‘inverted P’ course and a windward leeward with Peter Crooks and James Whitehead presiding respectively as race officers.

Apart from frequently changing wind directions on the Sunday morning the race officers had a reduced number of fleets to manage with 2 on each course, Enterprises and RS 200’s along with a general handicap fleet each. Apart from an hours rain on Saturday evening the weather was dry and often sunny with many people applying sun cream and the camping field even dried out! Those that attended the event had a great weekend and we really needed it after weeks and weeks of rain!

Off the water the event was lovely, bar open on Friday & Saturday evening and a warm buffet meal of chilli and jacket potato, salad and bread of course with dessert complimented with bottled beers, wines and local ale from Wold Top brewery! Filey SC will of course be running the regatta next year but at this stage no date is fixed. We have to run the event when the tide heights and time allow us to leave large numbers of boats on the beach on Friday & Saturday nights. We will be looking into this during the near future and making as final decision.

Please would you look out for the 2013 date on our website and when it is published inform your class associations to put it in their calendars and also put it on your club notice boards.

This year the Filey Traveller trophy was won by Ulley SC from South Yorkshire who had 15 boats entered, which was really nice as it broke the Beaver SC hold onto the trophy. Beaver have won the trophy since its inception in 2009 and it is a memento for the next 12 months of a good weekend at Filey.

Thanks to competitors for travelling and supporting the event and most of all thanks to FSC members who contributed to run this 2 day event and making it the success it undoubtedly is.

Filey is a small club with a big heart!

Paul Tyndall, Commodore Filey SC.

Improver Training June 2012

Sunday 10 June saw the first Adult Coaching Day at Filey kindly provided by the RYA to support more people sailing more often.

An experienced coach took new sailors and old sailors alike through a bit of theory to refresh everyone’s knowledge and then it was straight out onto the water for sailing a figure of eight in close quarters and tacking/gybing to the whistle.

Same again in the afternoon and then the pressure was ramped up with three races. There were Picos, Streakers, Toppers, a Topaz and a Wayfarer on the water and the light but steady on-shore winds made for perfect conditions to be trying a few new things out like roll-tacks and gybes.

The coach gathered everyone together at the end of the day for a de-brief and sailors gave feedback on what they had got out of the day. Everyone had benefited from that bit of time trying something new and some guided practice.

The coaching was provided free for members and, if there is further demand, the Club may be able to consider booking the coach again or a group of sailors could book the coach and share the cost.

In the mean-time, check out the website http://lulhamrobinson.webplus.net/ for news of the U16 World Mirror Champions who have also recently been awarded Yorkshire & Humber Sailors of the Year and if you are missing any tell-tales then check out the Ebay Shop at: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Lulham-Robinson-Sailing?_rdc=1

June Training Course

Come and try sailing Filey
Five adults and three juniors bravely attended the June training course this year – given the conditions and temperature of the water, it may well have been March rather than June.

Four people were instructed on the Club Omegas, one on a Pico and the juniors were out on Club Toppers.

Filey did it’s best to throw challenging conditions at the sailors and everybody took up this challenge incredibly well!

By lunch-time of the final day everyone had achieved their sailing qualification which meant that fun could then be had in the afternoon body-boarding, kayaking, catamaran sailing and, for the two-handed sailors, having a go on a single-handed boat.

The Club looks forward to welcoming all the sailors back during the season to improve their skills and to enter the novice races.

Thanks again to all the instructors on the course and all the safety-boat and shore volunteers. It takes a lot to put on the five day course and the new sailors were very grateful of the all the effort that the Club puts into this.

Canoe Outing

26th May 2012

12 people from FSC including two representatives from Filey school joined with East Barnby Outdoor Centre to travel down the River Esk again , to end up in Whitby. The photographs show us canoe sailing, traversing the weir and taking part in "team games" ... as well as having a great day paddling on the water. Again we must thank East Barnby for a perfect day made even better by the ideal weather conditions.

Come and try it...

Come and try sailing Filey FSC contacted the local senior school and with the help from the head of sport we offered a taster day for 20 children. Whilst the weather , in particular the wind , was not ideal , all participants had a great day. We split the visitors into three groups which in turn tried Kayaking , Catamaran sailing and Topper rigging during the sessions. We tried to keep all groups dry but by the last session most of them were having fun in the surf. Everyone who participated in the event was invited to join the FILEY ON BOARD CLUB that is due to commence on Monday evenings from 11th June 2012. A big thanks to all members who assisted in making this event a success.

Fitting Out Dinner. It was really nice to see so many members, old and new enjoying the evening, talking about this season’s forthcoming events and challenges. The relaxed format of the event seems to work for all, no speeches to be made or listened to and the Buccaneer now some beers from The East Coast Brewery, brewed in Filey!

The new decking project takes a major leap forward! After a number of years of problems with design, manufacture and implementation the decking project is now set to be completed within a few weeks. A group of dedicated club heroes ignored the sub zero temperatures and the treasurer's bad jokes this saturday to push the project forward. All the materials were delivered, stored and work commenced on making the superstructure rigid and ready for the next phase to be completed in two weeks.

Some photos of the progress can be seen here.

8th February

10 adults, 2 young men, and Jess met at Burton Agnes Hall. Very sunny but cold day. You kept warm by walking fast, did a 5 ish mile walk on country lanes on a figure of eight route around Burton Agnes Hall and village. Good company, many interesting conversations and we all agreed we couldn't wait to get back to Filey for a sail in March/April. We had a good view of a group of 4 deer in the middle of a ploughed field and we got a good view of the 'snowdrops' in the grounds of the hall (without paying) as the route we took wlked us past the perimeter of the grounds. The very cold weather we have experienced this winter meant the snowdrops are a little later this year.

We walked at a steady pace for almost 2 hours, finishing up at the hall whereby we went into the cafe and had food and drink.

The course runs over the two days and will cover the basics and niceties of boat set-up and sailing. This is ideal for beginners and more experienced hands alike. The association holds two teach-ins every year and by all accounts they are well worth attending.
